OWL Writing Workshops
The Online Writing Lab (OWL) is offering a series of writing workshops this semester. Students should RSVP at least three days prior to the workshop by sending an e-mail to OWL with "OWL Workshop RSVP" as their subject line. Snacks and drinks are provided for all workshops.
- Getting Started: Picking a Topic and Brainstorming.
Sometimes the hardest part of the paper is getting off to a good start. This workshop will concentrate how to get moving on a writing project, with particular emphasis on topic selection and brainstorming techniques.
Thursday, January 22nd, 5:45 – 6:45 pm, Robert and Pearle Ragsdale Center, Room 330 (Bain Boardroom).
- Achieving Focus: Organizing Your Paper around a Thesis. What is a thesis and why is it so important anyway? This workshop will explore different approaches to writing a thesis statement and how to organize to stay focused on the development of that thesis.
Thursday, January 29th, 5:45 – 6:45 pm, Robert and Pearle Ragsdale Center, Room 301 (Lucas Room).
- Shaping Your Thoughts: Effective Paragraph Techniques. When do I start a new paragraph? This workshop will introduce participants to some basic principles of paragraph organization and provide several models for effective paragraphs.
Tuesday, February 10th, 5:45 – 6:45 pm, Robert and Pearle Ragsdale Center, Room 330 (Bain Boardroom).
- Using Your Sources Effectively: Integrating Research Material. So, I’ve got some good research: How do I use it in my paper? This workshop will explore how to effectively integrate other people’s research and ideas into your own. In addition to some basics on citation, we will discuss how best to introduce, frame, and discuss that research material so that it serves the needs of your paper.
