Kinesiology: This course of study is designed to prepare students for careers as athletic trainers, physical therapists, recreational directors, coaches, and teachers of physical education in elementary and secondary schools. The program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree. The student selects a degree without teacher certification, or has the option for an area of specialization in all level (K-12) education. Consult the information for teacher education in the 2004-2005 Bulletin for complete information on areas of specialization in all-level physical education.

 

Elementary Certification (EC - Grade 4): Students completing the following academic programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas EC-Grade 4 teacher certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure examinations. All students working toward EC–4 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) elementary combination of subjects, 3) professional education, and 4) their chosen area of academic specializations (major).

 

Middle School Certification (Grades 4-8): Students completing the following programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas Grades 4-8 Teacher Certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure exams. All students working toward 8–12 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) professional education, 3) an area of academic specialization (major), and 4) a second teaching field (optional).

 

Secondary Certification (Grades 8-12): Students completing the following programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas grades 8-12 teacher certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure examinations. All students working toward 8–12 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) professional education, 3) an area of academic specialization (major), and 4) a second teaching field (optional).

 

All-Level Certification (Ec-Grade 12): Students completing the following programs will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the specific area of concentration and will be recommended for Texas EC-12 Teacher Certification upon graduation and the successful completion of the appropriate licensure examinations. All students working toward EC–12 certification must meet the course requirements under 1) general education, 2) professional education, and 3) an area of academic specialization (major).

 

Supplemental Certificates: The School of Education offers coursework to prepare certified teachers for two supplemental certificates: English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education.

 

Master of Arts in Teaching: Education is changing — schools need leaders to meet challenges and facilitate school initiatives, changes and reform. You’ll develop a deeper understanding of teaching and learning as well as acquire proficiency in instructional technology, assessment, and action research. The Master of Arts in Teaching not only provides you with solid teaching credentials but also the opportunities and training to achieve a leadership role in the teaching/learning community.
