Any questions regarding emergency procedures should be addressed to the University Police Chief.

BOMB THREAT

Every bomb threat is to be taken seriously. ALL bomb threats must be reported. If a bomb threat is received, wait until the caller hangs up and contact the University Police Department at 448-8444. University Police officers will evaluate the threat and initiate the appropriate response.

HOW TO HANDLE A BOMB THREAT BY PHONE

  • Do not panic, stay calm and be as friendly as possible to the caller (DO NOT INTERRUPT)
  • Use the checklist on the following page to document information during the call
  • Document voice characteristics of the caller, such as angry, calm, slow, excited
  • Listen for background noises
  • Record your impressions of the caller
  • Write down the time of the call

ACTIONS TO TAKE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE CALL

  • Call the University Police Department (448-8444)
  • Notify your supervisor
  • Search your office or area for strange/suspicious items, but do not touch anything that you suspect
  • Report any strange/suspicious item to your supervisor and to University Police
  • Follow the instructions of the emergency responders

EVACUATION PROCEDURE

If the emergency responders (police, fire fighters, hazardous materials team) order an evacuation, clear all people out of the bomb threat area immediately. Keep in mind that a vast majority of bomb threats are false. Common sense and good judgment must be your guide.
