Topper Text Changing
Watch for announcemens regarding changes to Topper Text. We will be moving to a new system for text messaging provided by Rave Wireless. Access to Topper Text will no longer be through Blackboard. The Rave Wireless system will allow you to specify multiple cell phone numbers and multiple e-mail addresses to receive emergency text messages. Until the new system is up we have removed access to the old Topper Text system so that we may move the current subscribers to the Rave system. Emergency messages may still be sent by authorized staff.
Recognizing Phishing Attempts
Phishing attempts have been around for years. Recently many attempts have targeted the St. Edward's community. You can recognize it as a phishing attempt because of the following characteristics:
- It asks for a username and password. No one from SEU will ever ask you to provide your password via e-mail.
- The From address is bogus: for example: hlpdek@stedwards.edu
- The Reply-To address is clearly not a SEU address: for example: customercaresupportteam@info.lt
- The e-mails are usually filled with misspellings also.
Never give your password out via email to anyone--not SEU, not your bank, not your credit card company, no one! If an e-mail has a link to a site that asks you to enter your login and password, do not do it! Use the web address you know to access the site, not a link you have received in the e-mail. Many phishing attempts make use of company logos to make the site seem legitimate.
Important Spam Filtering Changes
In order to reduce the number of spam mail messages received by the campus community all e-mail messages marked with a spam score over five (*****) found in the subject line will automatically be moved to the Junk mailbox on Zimbra. If you use Eudora or Outlook to check your e-mail, you will never see messages with a spam score over five. If you think you are missing messages that might have been incorrectly marked as spam, log into Zimbra and open your Junk mailbox. Messages saved to the Junk mailbox on Zimbra will remain there for 30 days.
Student Discounts on Computers and Microsoft Office
St.Edward's students may receive substantial discounts (priced at $47 - $65) on Microsoft Office at e-academy. Both Dell and Apple also offer educational discounts on computers.
