FAQ and Suggestions:

What equipment is available to record video?
There are DVC cameras that require mini DVD tapes. The DVC are high quality and most of them include external microphones.  Tripods with quick release heads are also available. The Samson H2 Zoom is the current digital voice recorder available for audio only.  Lighting equipment and wireless microphones are not available.

What are the equipment checkout policies and procedures?
Essentially equipment is available, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  No equipment is available on Fridays or holidays. We do not reserve checkout equipment. Always use a new mini DV cassette. Equipment loans are on a 48 hour basis.  Equipment checked out on Saturdays is due on Monday.  Label all materials and pick up the items yourself.  If there are questions or unresolved issues, please contact Austin Doak, 428-1244 or Adrian Tapia 428-1040. Please review our equipment loan policy.

If I want to request DVD copying or transfer what are the procedures?
Please provide name, contact information, due dates and any other information.  Any specialty work, cueing tapes, editing out parts requires extra time and the requestor must speak directly with professional staff.  Typically, we provide assistance and teach students how to edit.  Our staff does not edit digital video for students.  We have an online copying request form. All burning and copying is done in MH309. Students can bring in their materials and fill out the request online.

Which video formats are currently supported?

We support digital formats including MPEG4. Transfers involving other formats require the student to bring in the camera including VHS- C, 8mm, and Beta etc. Questions about copying should be addressed to Austin Doak, 428-1244 or Adrian Tapia 428-1040.

What is the best way to complete the project?
Utilize the resources on campus. Call 448-8796 and reserve a Ragsdale or Fleck conference room.  Call 448-8762 to reserve a classroom.  We usually can burn a standard DVD within 48 hours Monday through Thursday. The DVD will play on most computers and DVD players. Always retain the mini DVD tape for archival purposes.

Call Media Services at 448-8663. When checking out the equipment, ask for starter training.  Review the DVD before turning it in to the instructor.
