Welcome to the Master of Arts in Counseling Community

It is my pleasure to welcome you to learn more about St. Edward's University's new Master of Arts in Counseling Program (MAC). This program will provide you with the course work and fieldwork experience required to apply for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or both in the state of Texas. Our curriculum is fully approved by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors and Texasoard of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapy.

If you are interested in becoming a counselor, you will find that our professional education and training program is unique in many ways. We offer small classes Monday through Thursday evenings, designed to meet the needs of busy people who may work full or part-time, or who may be raising families. We also have many daytime classes at out north Austin campus. Professionals in the mental health field who have considerable experience as practitioners in the field teach our courses. Our courses are also based on a model of experiential learning, so that students are able to observe and practice actual counseling skills and techniques. The program is offered year round, so that students may be admitted in the fall, spring, or summer trimesters. We provide our students with individualized advising throughout their academic work, offering them the flexibility to take anywhere from one to four courses per trimester.

We also assist students with career choices in the field of counseling, guiding them to find the setting or population in counseling which best meets their needs. Graduates of the Counseling Program may be found working in a variety of settings, including hospitals, residential treatment centers, non-profit agencies, government or for-profit organizations. Students may choose to focus on working with children and adolescents, adults, or in group settings. Students are also assisted in their search for post-masters degree jobs, as they fulfill their requirement for post-masters' supervised experience.

I hope this information is helpful to you in making your decision about your continued education. Please feel free to call 512-448-8600 or gotograd@stedwards.edu, for general  graduate contact information.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Katz, Ph.D.
