Through the sale of their handcrafts, Ugandan women are able to have some financial control over their lives and the lives of their families. This sale is part of the SE-Uganda Mission Project, which contributes to the efforts of Holy Cross Brothers and Sisters who are assisting the women of Uganda in becoming self-sufficient.

An internationally acclaimed musical drama created and performed by Claudia Stevens. Adopting the persona of an elderly concentration camp musician who had performed at Auschwitz, Stevens uses firsthand accounts and music played and sung by the actual female inmates to depict the physical struggle and ethical dilemma of those who survived through their musical performance. The Affrilachian Poets are an ensemble of African-American writers who challenge simple notions of an all white Appalachian region and culture while drawing on traditions such as the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement and experiences of the African Diaspora. Their poetry celebrates their African heritage and rural roots while encompassing themes of racism and Black identity. Poets include Frank X Walker, Stephanie Pruitt, Parneshia Jones and Mitchell Douglas. Refreshments and book signing will follow the reading.

"From Ring Shout to Rize: African-American Performance Practices in the U.S."

In this discussion, post-doctoral associate Maisha Blevins Akbar will trace emergent African-American performance practices from the "ring shout," as first performed by African-American slaves, through hip hop to "krumping," as depicted in the 2005 documentary, "Rize." Blevins-Akbar will identify specific cultural tendencies within these performances, as well as how the performances function in American Society.
