St. Edward's University Community Provides Food for Families
For more than 20 years, St. Edward’s University has helped feed families over the Thanksgiving holiday. The meals are made possible through the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and the generous donations of the campus community. This effort will be one of many events held during Hunger Week, Nov. 11–17.
"Hunger Week is one of the many examples of the university’s commitment to service," says Lou Serna, assistant director of Campus Ministry. "For those of us who are able to assist our neighbor in need, it is imperative that we do so. It is our responsibility to give back to the community, and this is just one small way that we try to do that."
The cooperation and collaboration between the faith community of Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel and St. Edward’s University students, staff and faculty members will make the annual food drive a success.
The Scarborough-Phillips Library is getting involved with Hunger Week by offering a Library Fine Amnesty Program. Students who donate two canned food items will have their library fines forgiven.
The Hunger Banquet, held on Sunday, Nov. 11, will provide an experience of what it is like to go hungry and feel and the division between the classes. Attendees will be placed in upper, middle or lower class. The "upper class" will experience fine dining while "low class" participants will eat on the floor.
Members of the campus community are also invited to participate in a 24-hour Fast for Holy Cross Solidarity, Prayer Service for Hunger, Capital Area Food Bank Service Project, Soup & Substance discussion and visit The Global Table: How the World Eats during Hunger Week.
